The Standard still remains the standard... New guys have to expect to build their own legacy
"If the wheel isn't broken, no need to fix it, just clean it up a bit!" These were the words uttered by first-year head coach Darius Kelly, who is set to take on the responsibility of leading the Sabercats of Saguaro this fall.
A former standout at Syracuse, Kelly steps into the role after the team's impressive 6A state championship victory. However, for Kelly, the focus remains on maintaining the high standards set by the program, with the ultimate goal being the open division championship.
It's been two seasons since the Sabercats' last title appearance, where they narrowly lost in the final moments to a star-studded Basha program. But with key pieces from that talented roster still in the fold and some new additions via transfer, Kelly and the Cats are poised for success.
Among the standout players to watch this season are Garrett Martin and Dajon Hinton. Both players have been integral parts of the program since their freshman years and bring a wealth of experience to the team. Martin, a 4-star edge defender, is known for his explosiveness and strong presence on the defensive front. Meanwhile, Hinton, is a dynamic athlete that can impact all facets of the game: is coming off a season-altering injury, is expected to make a big impact on both sides of the ball this year.
The wide receiver position happens to look like the strength of Sabercats, with players like Mason Whitaker and Ressi Rinaldi leading the charge. Their veteran savviness, consistent, and big game experience should make an easier adjustment for transfer QB, Marcel Jones. Adding a deep threat like Tristan Armstrong to the mix only adds to the team's offensive firepower.
I believe the standard can remain the standard for the Sabercats this year. Depth, chemistry, and finding a team identity will be the only things holding this young team back from a serious open run.
