Mountain Ridge Edges Mountain Pointe 30-29 in Thrilling 5A Showdown

What a game. What a finish.

The Mountain Pointe Pride and Mountain Ridge Lions delivered a heavyweight 5A battle Friday night, September 11, with momentum swinging throughout the game before Mountain Ridge ultimately escaped with a dramatic 30-29 victory.

The game came down to the final quarter, where Mountain Ridge made the critical plays on both sides of the ball to secure the road win.

Blount Jr. Puts on a Show

Mountain Pointe junior athlete LaGarrett Blount Jr. was one of the biggest stars of the night, giving the Pride offense a spark every time he touched the football.

Blount Jr. finished the game with seven receptions for 125 yards and three total touchdowns, repeatedly creating matchup problems for the Mountain Ridge defense.

His performance helped Mountain Pointe stay within striking distance in a game that featured explosive plays from both teams.

The Pride also received a strong performance from Jamier McKinney, who ran through the Mountain Ridge defense before an injury forced him out of the contest.

McKinney finished with:

• 12 carries

• 123 rushing yards

• 1 touchdown

His running helped Mountain Pointe establish momentum and keep pressure on the Lions.

Pride Defense Steps Up

Mountain Pointe's defense turned in one of its strongest stretches during the third quarter.

The Pride held Mountain Ridge to just 33 rushing yards in the third quarter, keeping the game within reach and giving the offense an opportunity to make another push.

But Mountain Ridge continued to battle.

Mountain Ridge Finds a Way Late

Senior quarterback Amar Sutkovic helped settle the Lions' offense as Mountain Ridge moved the ball down the field when the game was on the line.

Junior tight end Layne Scarborough also played an important role in the Lions' offensive attack, helping Mountain Ridge maintain possession and move into scoring position.

Then came the play that changed everything.

Senior wide receiver Lukas Hindle came through with a spectacular 32-yard touchdown on a cross-field rollout dump pass, giving Mountain Ridge the go-ahead score in dramatic fashion.

With the game hanging in the balance, Hindle's big play gave the Lions the advantage they needed.

Defense Delivers the Final Blow

Mountain Ridge wasn't finished making plays.

The Lions recovered an onside kick, allowing them to maintain possession and control the closing stages of the game.

Mountain Ridge's defense then delivered another huge play when Landon Luethmer came up with a strip-and-score fumble recovery.

The defensive touchdown provided a massive momentum boost and helped Mountain Ridge close out the one-point victory.

After four quarters of back-and-forth football, the Lions walked away with a 30-29 win.

What's Next?

The victory moves Mountain Ridge to 2-1 on the season. The Lions will hit the road next week to take on Saguaro, looking to build on the momentum from Friday night's dramatic victory.

Mountain Pointe falls to 1-2 but showed plenty of fight against a talented Mountain Ridge team.

The Pride now face another major challenge, traveling to take on Desert Mountain, the defending state champions and one of the top teams in 5A.

Despite the tough loss, Mountain Pointe demonstrated that it can compete in a game that went down to the final moments.

For the Rolling Pride, the message is simple: regroup, learn from Friday night and get ready for the next one.

The season is far from over.
