Back in Action: Nisenson's Second Year Set to Make Noise in Arizona

Things are guaranteed to look a lot different for the Firebirds overall in Scottsdale. It is year two of the Doug Nisenson regime, and the coach is not here to play around.

The former Colorado man himself looks to take a page out of Coach Prime's book, with the recent hires he has made to the staff. Chaparral, who is coming off a tough 2-8 season, may have the best coaching staff in Arizona.

It was just a season ago when Nisenson took over for state champion coach Brent Barnes. I'll admit it was a bit of a tough break in for the new head coach, with limited time with his guys over the summer and the toughest schedule in Arizona.

The Firebirds had to take their licks just like any program that rebuilds in the past. But this year, with a full offseason and a complete turnover on staff, something in the area feels different for this program. You can feel and see confidence.

With seniors receiver Hunter Wohland and tight end Gavin Mesa, as well as a few others like the Hegg brothers returning, new transfer Cam Allen, last year's BJ's Media Freshman of the Year winner, should be able to settle in nicely. Kash Parker will also be a name to look out for. The very twitchy slot receiver will be young but very dynamic in this offense.

On the defensive side of the ball, Chaparral might have two of the most underrated prospects in the state making plays for their secondary. Seniors Jordan Williams will be a problem for opposing receivers. With such a long frame and athletic ability, Williams is coming into his own as a lockdown corner. After a big offseason on the 7s circuit, I expect Williams to be one of the best in the state this year. Behind him, he has a rangy, sure-tackling safety in Justin Fisher.

Fisher is a ball hawk; if a QB floats the ball, it will for sure be picked. Coming off a 4 INT and 8 PBU season, the senior is not afraid to stick his head in there. I can guarantee, if healthy, these two will be in the D1 conversation at the end of the year.

You can certainly expect the Firebirds to be very competitive this year. I believe they will be a 6A contender after a down season.
